The lights, the crowd, world-class competitors, and the exhilarating sense of history being made- The World Cup is upon us! This marks the 20th year of the FIS Visa Freestyle International Ski World Cup hosted at Deer Valley Resort. All events will be held under the lights at Snow Park, and each night will conclude with a fireworks display.
It’s an exciting spectacle of outstanding athletic achievement, but more than that, it’s an essential part of the competitive ski legacy Park City has sustained since the 2002 Winter Olympics. With the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics kicking off next month, the stakes are high, the pressure’s on, and you’ll be sure to feel it under the lights!
If you’re not familiar with Freestyle skiing, it is one of the most impressive disciplines to behold. Athletes flip and spin while jumping or skiing down mogul-covered terrain. Aerial skiing was popularized in the 1950s by our very own Olympic alpine gold medalist, Stein Eriksen, whose graceful flips mesmerized the world.
The following is the schedule of events as well as local Park City A Team athletes to look out for:
Wednesday, January 10th 7:00-8:10 pm- Mogul Competition
Thursday, January 11th 7:00-8:10 pm- Mogul Competition
Friday, January 12th 8:00-9:00 pm- Aerial Competition
The results of these events will affect Olympic qualifications. However, a couple of our hometown favorites have already qualified for the US Olympic Alpine Team- two-time gold medalist, Ted Ligety, and two-time Olympian, Megan McJames. As always, we’re excited to see these champions represent our town and country! Be sure to experience the World Cup this week and tune in to the Olympics February 9th through the 25th.
Another exciting opportunity to get involved is the Deer Valley Ski with a Champion Program, which allows you to personally hit the slopes with a local Olympic champion like Heidi Voelker or Shannon Bahrke. Call for more information: 877-288-2978
Park City is truly a hub for world-class competition and Olympic happenings. With so many opportunities to partake in the events and support our local champions, get out there and experience the excitement!
